Of all the many industrial resin flooring solutions, resin flooring systems are often held up as the most hard-wearing and durable of all. There are three main types of industrial resin flooring systems: epoxy resin, polyurethane (PU), and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Trusty Tread types of industrial resin flooring

Epoxy flooring is the most popular choice for resin flooring in industrial or commercial environments. Its distinguishing features are that it is an inexpensive material (so you can cover a large area at relatively little cost) and it is very durable and hard-wearing. This is because the epoxy resin hardens to a high level. It also adheres strongly to the underlying concrete surface, which helps to protect the underlying structure from damage.

Great for

Epoxy resin flooring is great for use on an industrial floor in manufacturing facilities, places where there will be heavy foot traffic, heavy equipment, heavy machinery, parking garages, warehouses, etc.

Distinguishing features:

  • very hard surface
  • chemical resistance
  • strongly adheres to a concrete floor
  • impact and scratch-resistant
  • huge range of colour and finish choices

The downside of epoxy resin flooring is that, because it sticks so well to concrete floors, if it does get damaged, the whole floor may need to be replaced.

Polyurethane is another popular industrial flooring choice. Like epoxy resin, it is a tough floor coating. Its main selling point, however, is that it is highly temperature resistant. It also has a fast curing time of around five days, which means that any industrial downtime for installation and repairs can be minimised. It is also a flexible floor, which makes it resistant to high impacts.

Great for

Because of its high levels of temperature resistance, polyurethane is great for an industrial floor in places like kitchens and other food production areas such as bakeries.

Distinguishing features

  • temperature resistant
  • chemical resistance
  • impact and scratch-resistant
  • hygienic
  • slip-resistant
  • absorption resistant

The main downside of polyurethane resin flooring as a commercial or industrial flooring solution is that it can be difficult to repair without replacing the entire floor.

You can think of PMMA as the Rolls Royce of resin industrial floor coatings. It is the most expensive choice and it has a distinctive high gloss finish, an almost glass-like appearance, which gives it its nickname "acrylic glass". It is also known as synthetic resin because, unlike the other resin flooring options, it is entirely manmade.

It has a very fast curing time of around four hours which means that any installation or repairs can take place over the weekend and won't interfere with the running of the setting. Unlike other resin floor coatings, it is easy to repair because of its interlayer chemical bond.

Great for

Because it is highly resistant to chemicals, PMMA flooring systems are often used in laboratories and other scientific and medical environments. It is also suited to outdoor environments because it is naturally UV-resistant (other types of resin flooring require an additional UV-resistant floor coating).

Distinguishing features

  • highly resistant to chemicals
  • easy to repair
  • durability
  • UV resistant
  • slip and shatter-resistant

The main downside to PMMA flooring is its cost. It is the most expensive choice out of all of the resin floor coatings for industrial flooring.

Industrial Resin Flooring
Industrial flooring solutions for you

It is always a good idea to think about the industry that you operate in. Most industries will benefit from resin flooring but the type of floors that will be the perfect solution will vary. For example, if you are looking for flooring that is extremely heavy duty then the best choice is often going to be an epoxy floor. On the other hand, if you work with strong chemicals, these could corrode epoxy or polyurethane flooring (as well as bare concrete) but they won't do any damage to PMMA coatings.

The installation is also an important consideration. This is a project that will leave you with tough long-lasting flooring that is easy to maintain. At the same time, if you are in an industry that would find it difficult to close down for a long period while waiting for your floor products to cure, then an epoxy floor may not be right for you and you may need a faster curing option such as PU or PMMA.

All of these resin flooring options will tolerate floor paint (e.g. for company logos or safety markings) and customisation and they vary in the surface textures and finishes options that you have. We can take you through all of your different customisation options so that you can make the right choice for your company.

A variety of industries utilise resin flooring due to its versatility and durability. These include manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, food processing, automotive, electronics, warehousing, and many others where a hard-wearing, easy-to-clean and chemical-resistant floor is required.

Yes, industrial resin flooring can be applied over old concrete floors, provided that the concrete is properly prepared and is in good condition. The surface must be thoroughly cleaned and any cracks or damage repaired before application to ensure optimum adhesion and performance.
